The master computer broadcasts an address, a command code, a variable field and a checksum. Why is termination important in an RS485/RS422 network? Ideally, the two ends of the cable will have a termination resistor connected across the two wires and two powered resistors to bias the lines apart when the lines are not being driven. Twisted pair wire with a characteristic impedance of 120 ohms is recommended with 120 ohm termination at each end of the communications line. The RS485 receiver compares the voltage difference between both lines, instead of the absolute voltage level on a signal line. It operates on a differential signaling method of measurement rather than voltage measurement wrt GND pin. Initializing the 68HC11 as a slave (by clearing the MSTR bit in the SPCR control register as explained below) automatically configures the /SS pin as an input. When the 68HC11 controls the network, it is referred to as a "master"; otherwise, it is a "slave". For the transfer of data, the baud rates of both Master and Slave must be between 10% of each other. In this case, cable connections must be made to Serial 1 at pins 5 and 6 of the 10-pin Serial Header or pins 7 and 8 on the 24-pin Field Header.
